Audra Mcdonald is a unique artist due to her range of talents and the variety of her skills as a performer and singer. She was the recipient of an all-time record of Six Tony Awards as well as two Grammy Awards and the Emmy Award. She was also named by Time magazine among the 100 most influential people and was awarded the National Medal of Arts - the most prestigious award given in America for excellence in art by the president Barack Obama. She is blessed with a beautiful soprano voice and an unparalleled talent of telling the truth in a dramatic manner, she is as much comfortable on Broadway and on the opera scene as she is in her film and television characters. She is an accomplished performer as a recording artist and concert performer, appearing regularly at some of the top venues around the globe. A musically inclined family, McDonald grew up in Fresno California and received her classical training at New York's Juilliard School. After graduating, she received her first Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured actress in musical for Carousel at the Lincoln Center Theater (1994). Over the course of the time following she won two more Tony Awards as a featured actor on Terrence Mcnally's Broadway debuts Master Class (1996) and Ragtime (1998) which gave her three Tony Awards at the age just thirty. In 2004, she received her fourth Tony starring alongside Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun and in 2012 she won the fifth time and first time in the lead actress category for her role as the title as the title character in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess. The Tony Awards' most decorated actor, she managed to set Broadway historical records when she won her sixth Tony Award for the role of Billie Holiday as Lady Day in Emerson's Bar & Grill. This role also provided the platform for the Olivier Award nominee 2017 London West End debut. As well as setting the record for highest awards won by actors in competition, she became the first individual to win distinctions across each of the four acting categories. The credits for McDonald's theatre work includes The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (99) Henry IV (2005) 110 in the Shade (2006) Twelfth Nacht (2009) the latter of which was her Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park premiere Shuffle Along or the Making of the Musical sensation from 1921 & Everything That Followed (2017) Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (2018) as well as Ohio State Murders 2023. McDonald was introduced to a television audience for her dramatic performance in Peabody Award winning CBS's Having Our Say: A look at the Delany Sisters first 100 years. After starring with Kathy Bates, Victor Garber as well as others in the critically acclaimed Disney/ABC remake Annie during 1999 McDonald was the role of a regular on the network's Law & Order Special Victims Unit. McDonald received her first Emmy due to her character as a character in the HBO adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning play Wit directed by Mike Nichols, starring Emma Thompson. In 2003, she returned to the screen, this time with Mister Sterling produced by Emmy Award-winning Lawrence O'Donnell Jr., with Josh Brolin. Early in 2006, she joined WB's The Bedford Diaries. The next year she was an occasional actor on NBC's Kidnapped. In the year 2016, McDonald was nominated for her fourth Emmy Award for her role in HBO's Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, which was a film special. In 2021, she was a co-star alongside Taylor Schilling and Steven Pasquale as part of The Bite, a pandemic film produced by Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios. McDonald was first seen as U.S. lawyer Liz Lawrence (now Liz Reddick), in CBS's drama, a legal-themed crime thriller The Good Wife, in 2009. In 2018 she returned to the role on The Good Fight for Paramount+ as a regular on the series. The performance earned her three Critics Choice Award Nominations. She is currently in the role of a guest star on Julian Fellowes's historical comedy The Gilded Age on HBO.
