Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, grandmother, and her godparents. Her father left her family. As a child Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford became interested in the acting profession during her teens and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of weeks, she realized this school wasn't right for her. Ford reapplied for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, after her fourth application she was admitted. Shaun Dingwall - who later appeared as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who - was one of her classmates. Ford was able to graduate in 1993. However, she already had her TV debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in programs on television like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Her regular work in theatre led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate gained recognition as a stand-up comedian that has been added to her portfolio in the year 1996.
